VFW food share program set for Monday

DUNCANSVILLE — The monthly Military Food Share distribution at the Duncansville VFW Auxiliary 8724 will be held on Monday, Sept. 12, beginning at noon.

This is for all active military, veterans and widows or widowers of veterans living in Blair County. The program is serving veterans in need and gives to individuals who meet the income guidelines. A military ID or DD214 or VA card and photo ID are required. Enter from Dunnings Highway/Newry Lane and line up on Turek Drive. The food shares are on the second Monday of each month. Anyone interested in volunteering can enter the parking lot and speak with Donna George.

Historical society to meet in Duncansville

DUNCANSVILLE — The Duncansville Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1200 Fourth Ave., Duncansville. Enter by the back door.

James Snyder Jr., president of the Blair County Genealogical Society, will discuss some maps he discovered in the society’s archives which show businesses in the 1800s.

PARSE to meet Sept. 20 in Hollidaysburg

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees (PARSE), Blair, Bedford, Huntington Chapter 1-10 met July 19 for a picnic meeting at the American Legion Social Hall. Entertainment was provided by Steve and Apryl Caldwell.

Sharon Dell and Jim Dell were selected as delegates, and Eva Howell volunteered as alternate delegate to attend the state PARSE Board meeting Sept. 13-14 in Gettysburg.

The next chapter meeting will be at noon Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the same location. Election of officers and directors for 2022-23 will take place. Anyone wishing to make a nomination should contact Sharon Dell at 814-793-0060.

The lunch for September will be fried chicken, pasta salad, broccoli salad, chips, cookies and beverages. Cost is $5 for members and guests. Members will receive a reservation form in the mail.

Trooper Christopher Fox representing the Pennsylvania State Police, Hollidaysburg Barracks, will present “Protection from Scams & other Safety Practices for Seniors.”

SAMA to host Blue Jean Bash Sept. 30

BEDFORD — The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Bedford will host the Blue Jean Bash from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art is at the historic Anderson House at 137 E. Pitt St., Bedford.

All proceeds will benefit the development of the new Children’s Discovery Gallery opening Friday, Oct. 21.

Reservations include local food favorites and live music. Enjoy a brew from Olde Bedford Brewing Company at their cash bar or BYOB. Must be 21 or older to attend. Sit on the back porch and enjoy the changing season and live music in the strawbale amphitheater set among the Mouse Myers Grass Memorial Garden. Take a chance on the 50/50 raffle. This open mic pickfest will bring the area’s most talented local musicians. Artists must call SAMA Bedford to reserve a spot in the line-up. Wear your blue jeans and boots to dance the night away.

Genealogical society to host speakers

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Roller Hojeth Memorial Library, 431 Scotch Valley Road.

Carl Sellers, his daughter Lora Sellers and his brother Gary Sellers — all members of the Dutch Corner History Group — will present “The Legacy of Indian Eve.”

“Indian Eve,” or Mrs. Eve Ernst, was taken captive by the Indians and lived with them at their camp before being traded to the English at Fort Detroit. She eventually made her way back to Bedford County. She is buried at the Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dutch’s Corner. The Sellers family are direct descendants of Indian Eve and have grown up with the story in their family. They formed the Dutch Corner History Group to collect and preserve the history of the families who live or have lived in the Dutch Corner area of Bedford County and to share the history of Indian Eve.

This meeting is free and open to the public.

Civil War Round Table to meet

STATE COLLEGE — The Central PA Civil War Round Table will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the PA Military Museum auditorium, 51 Boal Ave., Boalsburg.

Brian Luskey will speak on “Mercenaries or Patriots? Bounty Men in the Union Army.” This lecture is being sponsored by the Penn State Civil War Era Center and the Central PA Civil War Round Table.

Luskey is professor of history at West Virginia University. He is the author of two books, “On the Make: Clerks and the Quest for Capital in Nineteenth-Century America” (published by NYU Press in 2010) and “Men Is Cheap: Exposing the Frauds of Free Labor in Civil War America” (published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2020). At WVU, he teaches courses on antebellum and Civil War America, Abraham Lincoln, American cultural history, and the history of capitalism.

All members and anyone interested in joining the Central PA Civil War Round Table are encouraged to attend.

Catholic Daughters hold baby shower

Catholic Daughters Court No. 1755 recently held a baby shower hosted by Every Life Matters of Tyrone.

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by Regent Laurie Staub on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Hollidaysburg. A total of 43 members were present, including officers and six guests.

Area: ELM supports pregnant women

There are currently 87 members. It was reported the death of longtime dedicated member, Thelma Daus, in July.

Motions for allocation of monies were as follows: to allot $200 from the picnic auction to the Crafters for quilt supplies, to donate $100 to Mary’s Day, to donate $300 to Holy Trinity Schools for school supplies, to donate $250 each to the three Holy Trinity Schools and St. Patrick School, and to purchase two officer’s robes at $155 each,

Gloria Kolonich received the Catholic Daughter of the Year Award at the annual picnic by the local court.

Guest speaker was Carol Steffen from the Every Life Matters Organization.

This group was founded to supply support to pregnant women in Blair County in any way they may need. Catholic Daughters Court No. 1755 held a baby shower at the meeting.

The next regular meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14. For more information, contact Local Regent Laurie Staub at 814-327-9663.

Train weekend set for Sept. 17-18

Following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, the Altoona Association of Model Railroaders announced the return of Mike Phillips’ N-Scale Weekend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Blair County Convention Center, Altoona.

The model train show will include more than 12 operating layouts, including a model of the Horseshoe Curve and more than 100 vendor tables.

Admission is $7 per day or $10 for a two-day pass. Children 12 and younger are free with a paid adult admission.

The AAMR operates three scale model railroads (O Scale, HO Scale and N-Scale) at its facility at 2930 S. 10th Ave., Altoona. Additionally, visitors will also find a library dating back to the 1800s and a large collection of railroad memorabilia including one of the largest collections of locomotive builders’ plates in the area.

The AAMR is open to the public from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Fridays year-round and by appointment.
